An Australian-designed hydroponic fodder production system, first-innovated by Victorian Peter Doyle, recently featured on UK television to a viewing audience of 9 million people. Even growers have gardens, but this smart app may have wider applications. University of Melbourne researchers have launched a new iPhone app that factors in local rainfall information and plant type to help gardeners remember how much to water and when. The ‘SmartGardens’ app is free and is available at the iTunes store. The app was designed by Dr Jon Pearce from the Department of Information Systems with Dr Adrian Pearce from Computer Science and Software Engineering at the University of Melbourne. Read More »

In September 2011 we made the long haul across the pond to England to attend an International Organisation for Biological Control (IOBC) workshop, specifically, a meeting of the Western Palaearctic Regional Section, Temperate Climate Working Group for Integrated Control in Protected Crops. Philips ‘GreenPower’ Interlighting
Philips has introduced a new LED lighting concept – Philips GreenPower, specially designed for interlighting.
LED interlighting is the ideal energy-efficient solution for lighting in between the plants. The GreenPower LRD modules give off very little heat and so require no active cooling. They are simple to install in any new or existing greenhouse. The LED interlighting modules have LEDs on both sides, so they can light two rows of plants at once.
